The other day I went out to Smith to sit on a rock and watch the sunset and the moonrise. I tend to avoid busier landmarks and thus don’t wander out that way too often, but when I do it’s early as hell or late in the evening when all is quiet except the climbers with their headlamps on the wall.
I waited for the moon to come up, till the only sound was the wind in the willow wisps by the water, a duck dipping upside down and a fish flipping its tail up. Till cameras were useless and only the senses could tick away at the holy quiet that falls on warm rock and cool water and breathing sagebrush.
It’s not always the grandest and loneliest moments that inform and feed that longing spirit for wildness. Sometimes it’s just putting yourself in a moment that is usually left for the sage grouse and the diving bats - where the land exhales into its quiet revery.
