“The Bond of Kinship.”
Smith Rock, Oregon. Oil on panel. 24 x 36 inches. Painting is done directly on a sealed piece of 3/4 inch thick baltic birch. There is a 3/4 inch border around the painting of exposed wood. Ready to be hung on a wall with stretched D-rings, or taken to a professional framer for a more elaborate setting if preferred.
This is a sacred place for many folk, a place to return to and habituate. It is profound to me that no matter the number of people it holds, the energy at Smith remains the same. There is a strong sense of rooted belonging that emanates from this valley. Maybe this is what was built from years of gathering and trusting each other to hold us as we risk, discover and journey.
I personally associate Smith with my sister Anna, who is one of my dearest friends, and who took the picture this painting was built from. When I first moved to Central Oregon, she came to visit and climb. I felt a wholeness being at Smith with her that I will never forget. In title and in spirit, this piece is a tribute to her and that feeling.
I have danced around doing a smith painting for years. Feeling nervous to try and capture a place that is so well known and loved - every rock face named and ledge cherished. But the time drew near and I felt it, and this image has been living in my subconscious, and I made the painting. While I do not claim it to be anatomically perfect, I did put a lot of care and intention into Morning Glory / Ship Rock etc. I hope the soul comes through.
PLEASE NOTE THAT PAINTING WILL SHIP IN 2 WEEKS AFTER PAINT HAS CURED AND IMAGE HAS BEEN SCANNED FOR RECORDS.
Signed,
Raina.
